Using Insurance, Employee Assistance Programs, & Out-of-Network Benefits for Therapy in California
In-Network Therapy with Tricare West in California
Finding care for your child or yourself can be challenging, especially when cost is a barrier. The Child Psychology Center is proud to be an in-network provider with Tricare West for both therapy services and psychological testing.

We submit claims electronically on your behalf directly to your insurance company. Our administrative staff will help verify your benefits and inform you of any deductibles or copays that may apply before insurance begins contributing to the cost of your sessions.
Please note that while we do our best to verify benefits, this is only an estimate, not a guarantee of coverage. We encourage you to contact your insurance company directly to confirm your benefits.
It’s important that you share all active insurance plans with us and notify us immediately of any changes or lapses in coverage. Ultimately, you are responsible for all charges if your insurance company does not cover the services rendered.

If you plan to use insurance to pay for psychotherapy or psychological assessments, please keep in mind:
Insurance companies require a psychiatric diagnosis for reimbursement.
Some plans require pre-authorization before your first session; without it, insurance may deny billing. Please have your authorization number, co-pay, and session limit ready at your first appointment.
Insurance does not cover missed or late-canceled sessions. We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you miss an appointment or cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, you are responsible for the full contracted rate (your co-pay plus the insurance portion).
If you arrive late, insurance may not cover the full session time, and you are financially responsible for the remaining balance.
-
Before your first appointment, it’s a good idea to contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage. You can ask:
Do I have mental health benefits?
Which company manages my mental health coverage, and what is the billing address?
Do I need pre-authorization for psychotherapy or psychological testing?
What is my deductible, and has it been met?
How much does my plan cover for in-network and out-of-network providers?
What is my co-pay for psychotherapy or psychological testing?
How many sessions per calendar year are covered?

Utilizing Out-of-Network Benefits for Therapy in California
In addition to being an in-network provider with Tricare West, the Child Psychology Center works with many families who use their out-of-network (OON) insurance benefits to receive partial reimbursement for therapy or psychological testing.
If your insurance plan offers out-of-network mental health coverage, you may be able to submit claims for reimbursement after paying for sessions directly. At the beginning of each month, we will provide you with a superbill (an itemized receipt of services) that includes all necessary information for submission to your insurance company.
-
If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, it’s helpful to call your insurance provider and ask the following questions:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed for out-of-network providers?
Is there a deductible I need to meet before reimbursement begins?
What is the process for submitting a superbill for reimbursement?
Are there limits on the total number of visits or sessions per calendar year?
Are there limits on the reimbursement amount per session?
If so, ask what they reimburse for the following CPT (procedure) codes:
• 90791 – Initial intake appointment
• 90834 – 45-minute individual psychotherapy session
• 90837 – 60-minute individual psychotherapy session
• 90846/90847 – Parent coaching or family sessions (45 minutes)
-
Reimbursement rates and policies vary by insurance provider, and the Child Psychology Center cannot guarantee coverage or reimbursement amounts. For the most accurate information, please contact your insurance provider directly.
-
At this time, CPC is not able to enter into Single Case Agreements (SCAs) or Gap Exceptions that require CPC to bill insurance companies directly.
However, we are happy to support clients in requesting an SCA or Gap Exception that allows clients to pay for services upfront and use a superbill for reimbursement from their insurance. Our team can provide the superbills and documentation of a diagnosis needed to submit to insurance independently.
Interested in Using Your Out-of-Network Benefits?
Our team will be happy to provide you monthly superbills to submit for reimbursement.
Using Lyra Through Your Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
If you receive Lyra Health benefits through your employer, you may be eligible for a set number of fully covered therapy sessions each year. In many cases, Lyra also extends this benefit to dependents, which means your child may also be eligible for covered sessions.
Please check with your employer or Lyra directly if you have questions about how your specific benefits work or how many sessions are included in your plan.
